Goiter
A goiter is an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. It may develop when the thyroid produces too much, too little, or a normal amount of hormone. Goiters can be caused by iodine deficiency, autoimmune conditions, or nodular growths. While some goiters are asymptomatic, larger goiters can lead to visible swelling in the neck and difficulty breathing or swallowing. Treatment depends on the cause and may include medication, surgery, or observation.
Graves' Disease
Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system mistakenly stimulates the thyroid to produce excessive thyroid hormones, resulting in hyperthyroidism. It often leads to anxiety, weight loss, tremors, palpitations, and heat intolerance. In some cases, it can also affect the eyes, causing bulging or irritation. Dr. Grant provides expert evaluation and treatments, including antithyroid medication, radioactive iodine therapy, or surgery when indicated.
Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces an excess of thyroid hormones, speeding up the body’s metabolism and leading to weight loss, rapid heartbeat, nervousness, and excessive sweating. Causes of hyperthyroidism include Graves’ disease, toxic multinodular goiter, and thyroid nodules that secrete hormones. Treatment depends on the cause and may involve medication, radioactive iodine, or surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland.
Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid cancer arises from abnormal cell growth within the thyroid gland. While many thyroid cancers grow slowly and are highly treatable, some can be more aggressive. Common types include papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic thyroid carcinoma. Symptoms of thyroid cancer may include a lump in the neck, voice changes, or difficulty swallowing. Dr. Grant offers advanced surgical treatment and comprehensive follow-up care for all types of thyroid cancer.
Thyroid Nodules
Thyroid nodules are growths that form within the thyroid gland. Most are benign, but some may be cancerous or cause hormonal imbalances. They are often discovered during routine exams or imaging tests and can sometimes present with a lump in the neck, hoarseness, or trouble swallowing. Depending on the nature and behavior of the nodule, treatment may include monitoring, surgery, or minimally invasive techniques such as radiofrequency ablation.
